Random

Went to lake retreat "All Spanish Immersion" weekend with [livejournal.com profile] elcazavampiros. (Note: For those who I don't bore daily, Caza is a Spanish professor. He was teaching a class. We're not just big, random Spanish speaking geeks. Okay, we so are.)

I had to speak Spanish all weekend and was shocked at how much I knew. More than curse words and beer names! Woo-hoo!!! Highlight of the weekend:

Mi amiga nueva, Amber, shows me of pics of her Colombian fiancé (totally hot in that pouty lipped, polo playing shirtless kind of way.) I ask her his name and she says, "Oswaldo, but he goes by Oz." I squee and say: "Como en Buffy!" The girls giggle indulgently. Why am I 34, sitting at table of 21-year-olds and I'm the only one bouncing and squealing, "Boof-ay!" ('cause you have to say it with the exagerated Spanish accent)?

Back home, I sit down to work on Rodeo II: There's No Hide We Can't Ride (okay, still working on a title) and instead just end up googling things gay cowboy. Found a great pic to iconize (if [livejournal.com profile] adis723 loves me, and I think she does) and a truly horrible original gay cowboy fic that had the guys saying lines (in all seriousness) like, "C'mere, you tall drink of water and let's rub buckles." Snerked. A lot. New friend [livejournal.com profile] smashsc you-send-it'd me her gay cowboy song mix. For this, I have much love.

Got a call from [livejournal.com profile] stoney321 and we shared tales of heinous sister-in-laws and heinous students who give evaluations that read: "Esposa (that would be me) and perro (that would be Max, the weiner dog) should be incognito (at the immersion) because they're not students." Well, kiss my ass for participating. You don't have the Sue and Max love? That's literally like hating sunshine and puppies.

Recs

Stuff I've read and loved in recent days:

Spike/Xander

In From the Cold by [livejournal.com profile] camisha and [livejournal.com profile] reremouse. Two of my favorite S/X writers teaming up do a Human AU? Oh, hell yeah. Between the two of them, they write some of the best Xander dialogue I've ever read. And the concept of Xander paired with twins Spike and William is extremely well done here. Especially the designation of who the "bad twin" really is. WIP

Apartment 4A by [livejournal.com profile] kyrieane. WIP. Kyri probably ties with [livejournal.com profile] adis723 for me in regard to writers who can create imagery so vivid and real it leaves me gasping and then pouting 'cause I wanna be able to do it, too. This is a Human AU with a hiding-inside-himself Xander (Alex) and a human Spike that, well, sounds like Spike:
“I don’t have any impulse control, and no respect for personal space. Just so you know.” And then Spike was touching him, running curious fingers down his nose and around his lips.

Tangled Hearts by [livejournal.com profile] tgray. Tgray was the first, and still reigning Queen of my AU world. Plus, she usually works Angel in between Spike and Xander (sometimes literally) and my inner angst whore just thrives on that. Complete.

Spander Drabbles by new friend [livejournal.com profile] altyronsmaker. I'm usually iffy on drabbles (it's cause I'm jealous because I can't be that succint. I admit it) unless they're by [livejournal.com profile] adis723 or [livejournal.com profile] darkhavens, but I clickied anyway, and these were beautiful. Here's a tease of the first:

They were all gone now, dreams of perfection long lost, and he was where he needed to be. He closed his eyes and breathed in the scent of leather.

The Road to Poofdom by [livejournal.com profile] bytemi66. This was one of the first stories I read when I got into S/X and it's honestly probably one of the best combinations of laugh-out-loud funny, gasping hot and canon-with-a-twist I've ever read. And she's just shared it on [livejournal.com profile] bloodclaim! It's complete, and she'll be posting in installments. And there's a sequel! And guess who gets to beta? *g*

For Love of My Brother by [livejournal.com profile] _sharvie_. WIP
I'll be honest: although I've read a couple of good ones, I'm not big on the brother!kink. However, when [livejournal.com profile] _sharvie_ asked me to beta hers, I did so gladly, 'cause even though it's not my thing, to quote "Best Little Whorehouse": I don't care if you get off on getting your ass tickled with a feather. I like to think that's what heaven's all about. So beta I did. And it's fantastic! She's ignoring the kink for the psychological (and really getting inside Xander's head.) Plus a twisty, turny plot that keeps me squeeing that I get first look...and part 5 should be up soon!

Other

Along for the Ride, Xander/Lindsey, by [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88. I know saying read Entre Nous is like saying, 'Try chocolate! It's good!' but just in case. I really like the twist she wrote in this, with how Xander and Lindsey meet, and pickup trucks do just do it for me. You can take the girl out of Muskogee, but...

Bent Justice by [livejournal.com profile] toobusy2write.
Yeah, I know you're already reading it. It's that Spike/Angel Human AU where everyone's in prison, and after you stop wrinkling your nose at that, you discover she's using this fascinating concept called 'plot' that I understand is popular with the kids these days. And fantastic Andrew voice. Yes, you read that right. [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue (you know I mean it, going 3rd person) said fantastic Andrew. WIP

Family: Ties That Bind, Connor/Drusilla, by [livejournal.com profile] stoney321. Damn, when Stoney decides to get serious, she gets serious. Seriously twisted and brilliant, that is. And she's making me love Connor!!!! Look at the pretty:
Connor heard Holtz screaming in his head, push her! Stake her! Cut off her head! but could only stand next to her and look down at the rippling surface of the ocean.

"Huh. You really don't have reflections."

"Oh, we do, little Connor."

They continue to stare down at the surface of the water, one face looking back at them.

Rough Magic, Angel & Wes, by [livejournal.com profile] karabair. It's not slash (well, insert your own subtext if you want) but she gets inside these characters heads in such a Jossian way that I feel like my fics are rambles on a Big Chief table in crayon (yeah, I know I've used that before. I love it.)

Birthday, Spike/Angel, by [livejournal.com profile] uberaeryn. She's kinda lost in that new show that looks like Gilligan's Island with hotter people right now (what? It took me 7 1/2 years to catch onto Buffy) but she writes Spike/Angel that just makes me feel good. And the image of Illyria clicking a car alarm is just...neat.

Just Another Irish Rose, Angelus/Drusilla, by [livejournal.com profile] julia_here. Finally got to start this, and it's so grand and amazing in its depth. To saying nothing of the Angelus/Dru interaction:

“Hush, my sweetest, hush, my child, we’ll go back to our game, be still, be still.” He crooned as if she was a sickly babe, and shushed, and wondered where her dolls were packed, and petted her hair. He kissed her forehead, and then her throat, stroked her back, lied with his hands and his lips: told her with his kisses and bites that nothing was wrong or worrisome, that this night was made for games.

Really Other

Say My Name, Justin/Brian and Gale/Randy, by Keisha7. I don't read a lot of Queer as Folk fic, unless [livejournal.com profile] adis723 or [livejournal.com profile] spuzz nudge one my way. This one is a fantastic-voiced, freaky, funky twisting bit between Justin/Brian fic and (gasp!) RPS, and it's absolutely incredible. And I just signed on to beta...I know, I have no shame. WIP

I wrote that?

Gee, I did.

Just sent Chapter 22 to Matthew and need to get up in the morning and start 23. I SO miss the days when I had a buffer.

Glad you like it; it's being remarkably weird to write, since I started with the firm intention of showing people I can't write fiction, and so I chose a pairing and millieu I normally avoid.

And boo with the rejection of esposa and perro: funny how different things are from when the 1976 Pleistoscene Environments Field Trip included wives and babies.

Julia, nice to get encouragement from people, by the way

Yep, you wrote that! Hand how much I love that you wrote "1976 Pleistoscene Environments Field Trip." Am amused. :)

YAY to all the recs! And The Road to Poofdom, I loved that story, it was so funny! And now I know there's a sequel I shall squeal and spin around in circles. In my head. In my room. With the curtains closed.

Date: 2005-04-11 01:40 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
Poofdom!!! *spins with you, closes curtains tighter 'cause Stoney keeps trying to look in*

Date: 2005-04-11 09:11 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_sharvie_/
Can I gush and blush at the same time? Well, yes, I think I can! *beams*

Thanks for the rec! And the other recs as well. So many fics to read and take up all my time. Yay!

Wait a sec...if I'm reading all the time, I can't write. *head desk* I know! Cloning! We'll clone me and then one of us can write and the other can read.

It's the perfect idea! ;-)

Date: 2005-04-11 01:38 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
I've been trying to clone [livejournal.com profile] elcazavampiros for years. If I figure that out, we'll start working on you.

Thank you so, so, so much for the pictures. I really appreciate you going to that much trouble. (And the boyfriend, as well.) :)

I was going to say last night that I thought [livejournal.com profile] tgray's story was called something "Dreams," and I was right! Dream of You. There are 3 parts. Let's poke her with sticks until there are more...

Date: 2005-04-12 12:57 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_sharvie_/
I think she might object to the sticks...how about Q-tips? *g*

And no problem on the pics. I had fun! I was all excited that something I was taking a pic of might end up in the fic. *bounce*

Ay, yi, mi amor, este estudiente es muy, muy loco. Si`? Si`.

Tu`? Tu` eres muy guapa y brillante. Y Max es muy... uh... adorable? (Ah door ah blay) Recs! Recs that I'll read!! And your check is on the way.

:-D

Mis dientes me molestan. :(

I think I have TMJ. TMI? Heh. I didn't sleep well because my jaw and ear hurt. *insert pet here* I have nothing to say. I feel totally uninteresting this morning. Bleah. Did you get the "Interracial, Homo Kind of Love," song?

Date: 2005-04-11 01:49 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
I did, I did. Gonna give it a good listen when the three year old stops clinging today.

TMJ? Does your jaw click when you open your mouth wide or chew? Otherwise, could just be an ear infection (or sumptin'.) (Psst: I have TMJ and it sucks. Hence? Braces soon. *cries*)

Yo soy triste.
¿Porque?
Porque mis zapatos es muy pequena.

¿Donde esta la ban~a?

I'm tappped. (Just trying to test out my tilde and inverted question mark, since the grave mark is backwards...)

Date: 2005-04-11 02:06 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
Lo siento para los zapatos pequeños. (I cheated and used the character map.)

I am starving. I got used to eating a big breakfast every day (cooked by someone else) over the weekend.

No jaw clicking. But my bite isn't even and it hurts when I chew. It did this earlier, but got better when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. Now it's at it again. Meh.

Date: 2005-04-11 03:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
Character map?? I looked up the codes and found: & #96; for the grave and & #126; for tilde.

What do you use?

Sue! Gitcha some food, STAT. Poor owie jaw. Gunna see a dentoost? Playing with words is fun. Make that phun.

Date: 2005-04-11 04:47 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
Hurray for Jame icon!!!!

I just go to "all programs" and then to "accessories" and then "character map" and copy and past. I knew all of the html codes for Spanish characters, but for some reason they won't work on LJ. *shrugs*

Date: 2005-04-11 04:49 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
copy and paste. Soy un perdedor.

Date: 2005-04-11 09:59 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
Um, Sue? Does your boss know that you are on crack at work? Or are you ensconced in your new religion and speaking in tongues? "I just go to 'all programs' then to..."

Where the hell do you see "all programs?" DO you even know what you are talking about? Are you just making fun of me? Are you calling me fat?

Date: 2005-04-11 01:40 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] altyronsmaker.livejournal.com
Squee!!!!! Thankies for the rec, and for the recs. Most of which I too am currently reading. Good stuff all!

*curses my driect TV and meager budget* Can't get showtime due to finances, but God I love Queer as Folk. That Brian?? Guh! *shivers*

Date: 2005-04-11 01:45 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
You are welcome! I don't have Showtime, either. I'm actually a season behind and getting caught on "Netflix." Or I have [livejournal.com profile] adis723 act them out over the phone. Hee!

Date: 2005-04-11 08:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] cityphonelines.livejournal.com
Yes, I do act them out for her, but if you don't wanna hear me be lame or are too impatient wait for NetFlix (like me) and can't afford Shotime (again, like me) you can find most of the eps for downloading at [livejournal.com profile] qafdownloads. That's how I got caught up.

Oh, cool -- glad to have the recs list (bookmarked for less busy days, though the pull of the drabbles is strong -- yay for short fics sometimes, I tells ya!)

And thanks for including me! **beams at you**

Date: 2005-04-11 04:46 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
Yay for recs! I always feel bad for the ones I forget. :(

But yeah, your X/L went into memories. Que bueno! Seriously, I'm stopping that now. And it's possible that my estimate of having Rodeo II done by tomorrow was a bit hasty, as I didn't realize tomorrow was tomorrow. :)

God, that's so like tomorrow, coming up tomorrow when you're not ready for it! **is huffy**

You're so fancy with the Spanish weekend. I know some French, have forgotten much Latin, and can speak a bit of Italian, but I never learned Spanish except for the Sesame Street words. Peligro! is a big favorite.

Date: 2005-04-11 10:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
Hee!! you are referring to the owl that hoots, "whoo whooo whoooo.... peligro!" yes?

Sorry for the spam, it just makes me giggle to remember that.

Yes yes! And he keeps saying it, and then he finally flies into...a wall? and says... "ooooh," sadly, as he crumples to the ground.

Um, or I may be misremembering. But yis, that sounds like the same cartoon owl. :)

Heinous students indeed! I hope that was the rare exception. Do you think that evaluation was from a student who's secretly in love with [livejournal.com profile] elcazavampiros and didn't want competition from the wife over the weekend away? That's my overly dramatic theory, anyway.

I'm so excited to hear that there's a sequel to The Road to Poofdom! That's one of my favorite stories.

I'm reading most of your other recs, but I'll gladly catch up on the few I'm not, because I know they'll be well worth it.

How goes the new house? Are you all settled in yet? You said something about issues with it...

Date: 2005-04-11 06:43 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
Do you think that evaluation was from a student who's secretly in love with elcazavampiros and didn't want competition from the wife over the weekend away?

Hee! That was Stoney's theory, too. This was an older student (over 50) so I don't know that she has the hots for the Caza-man, but it's possible. I think she was just unhappy about having to speak Spanish with no English. Eh. Everyone else had a great time (including Max and me.)

The house is ok. Just plumbing. Eck.

Dude, thanks for that QAF rec. Excellent and I had never seen it before. Cool cool.

Date: 2005-04-12 06:12 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
I wondered if you'd seen it. I had attack of the comma whore when I read it and begged to beta...so I get sneak peeks. Yay!! Again, no shame. Since I've been dumping Rodeo icon ideas on Vinnie lately, if I say, emailed you some screencaps of Justin I made last night, and you were feeling creative, an icon could possibly happen, yeah? Repeat: shameless.

Date: 2005-04-13 05:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] spuzz.livejournal.com
No I hadn't, but that's cool, I noticed stuff but the characterization was better than I expected, I'll be sure to pimp it in my journal. I'm planning a huge QAF recs post. Re: icons. Yeah absolutely I'll make you some icons. Send em over either to my gmail account spuzzster@gmail.com, or tomorrowismine_today@yahoo.com I need some inspiration.
Why is there a line through [livejournal.com profile] uberaeryn I'm worried.
