I am so frustrated with Sherlock fic!

Maybe it's all the years of reading HP fic, but I just find the quality of Sherlock fic lacking. There's so much unnecessary quoting of canon dialogue (only Buffy comes to mind as a close second) and there are so many fics rated E that have a single sex scene, and it's a hand-waved hand-job.

And I don't want to be ageist, truly I don't, because Ladycat and Viciouswishes wrote amazing prose, insight, introspection and smut when they were barely out of their teens, but the Tumblr-esque tee-heeing over "We're only 14! And we're in love with 30-40 year old men!" drives me batshit. As if that's a new thing for teens, as if James Marsters and Tony Head and Robert Downey Jr and Patrick Stewart and George Clooney and Colin Firth didn't exists for those of us young in the 80s/90s/2000s?

Unfortunately, that attitude bleeds into the fic. Tired of reading UST filled fic that culminated in a off-page blow job, I Googled "Hottest Sherlock fic" and the VERY first Tumblr rec post I found rec'd a threesome fic, but then decried the true possibility that men that age (mid-to-late 30s) would have sex that much (about once a day). ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Yeah, I know for a lot of people who haven't hit 35+, the idea that people their parents' ages (gasp!) still have frequent, often kinky, desperate, sweaty, sometimes in groups, sometimes ill-considered sex can be a shocker.

But please, fan fiction writers of Sherlock fandom, please stop and look at Benedict Cumberbatch in 2015. He was 38 years old, newly married for the first time, and impregnated his (then) 36 year old wife twice in 18 months. And it's not even healthy, hard-bodied adults like Benedict in "Dr. Strange" who can still burn up the sheets over 35. A LOT of people discover their kinky side in their 30s and 40s.

Jay Z is 47 -- my age -- and in the past year has weathered the fallout of his multiple infidelities after Beyoncé released "Lemonade," released and promoted a new album, and just had a set of twins with a woman who has one of the most perfect bodies ever created. FORTY. SEVEN.

And John Watson has a 24-hour refractory period at 39? The hell.

In conclusion: Please rec me some smut.

Hi, fandom! I know if you're anything like me, you don't post for a few years and then write a multi-fandom opinion piece about every fic you've read in the past 13 years.

I'm going to talk about my kinks, squicks, tropes, and fic recs in ALL of my many few fandoms since 2004.

Questions to be posed and perhaps answered include:
  • Why does mpreg only work for me in the Harry Potter verse?
  • Why does A/B/O leave me cold? (Actually we can answer that right here: drooling sphincter).
  • Why do crossovers only work for me if you cross a genre fandom with Queer as Folk? Everyone likes the thumpa-thumpa?
  • What is it about me that loves? Adores? Obsesses?
  • Will I ever get tired of J2 AU fic (that doesn't involve drooling sphincters)?
  • Will I be the person who reads every grammatically correct Harry Potter fic ever written (and some of the wonky syntax ones)? Is there a Guinness category for this? How would I prove it?
  • Why do epithets annoy the fuck out of me, but pet names don't? Ask the former Army doctor for me, love.

  • Please join me, if you would, and we'll explore this (and my obsession with kid!fic!) as we scroll through time, space, wizarding space, and navel gazing.

Oh, my God, I have to remember how to use HTML.

So, live journal is deleted and everything is moved over here. It's kinda depressing to see that my "created on" date is now 2012 instead of 2004. Will I use this? Hmm. Not sure. I don't know who is here other than Kathy, Brandi and Lorraine.

Oh, Brits in Teen Wolf fandom, you're killing me with your "proper" and "whilst" and "meant" and "shall." I know you watch scads of American TV, surely you've noticed that we don't talk like that? You rarely boggled me this much with SPN fic (other than that one time that Jared and Jensen ate chicken fried steak and enchiladas together, but non-Texan-Americans are often clueless about the Lone Star state, so I gave you a pass). Let me put it this way, by the time you write Stiles or Derek saying, "I'm meant to be back at uni in a fortnight, so shall I give you a proper kiss whilst we ring for a curry?" we're no longer in California.

Although I did laugh for 15 minutes in the midst of a HS AU while Stiles appreciated the fact that his high school cafeteria did a decent curry. Wow, that Michelle Obama really DID spruce up the fish sticks and Jell-O! Well, it was a welcome break from curly fries and coffee shops, I'll say that for it.

I was commenting to my TV addict husband that I don't think of myself as someone who watches A LOT of TV, because I read more than I watch and I always seem to have time to dick around on Pinterest or talk on the phone for hours and therefore am obviously not a huge TV nerd. Lies, damn lies. So I work 40 hours a week at a college, take care of a 5 year old boy who is reading (Eeee!!) and cook from scratch and listen and offer support to my friends as they plan weddings and college majors and possible children and huge life decisions, all the while maintaing a head of thick(ish) curly hair, giving my husband something he can feel and reading a shit-ton of "Teen Wolf" AUs. And yet I watch:

    1) How I Met Your Mother
    2) Modern Family
    3) Raising Hope
    4) Nashville
    5) The Big Bang Theory
    6) Supernatural
    7) American Horror Story
    8) Agents of Shield (!!!)
    9) New Girl
    10) Teen Wolf
    11) Breaking Bad
    12) Mad Men
    13) Game of Thrones
    14) The Walking Dead
    15) Downton Abbey

Granted, most of those shows are staggered by hiatus, so I don't I don't feel like I'm watching *that* much in any given season. There are also shows I watch when Caza's watching them (True Blood, Wilfred, Warehouse 13, etc) that I don't *count* as watching, because I don't ask him to pause the DVR if I have to pee, and I'm usually either looking at pics on Tumblr or reading a magazine while he's watching it.

The Game, however, is this: CAN YOU BEAT IT? While I feel I have a light-nerd-typical amount of TV watching, I think Caza may be the Big Kahuna, especially given his RL to TV time ratio. CAN YOU OUT NERD CAZA???

    It Is So On )

    So...can you beat him?

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] stoney321 for updating everyone we were okay after the destructive tornado in south Oklahoma City yesterday. My phone was blowing up all day and night and I wasn't in a great frame of mind. Eddie, Jonah, our fur babies and our house are fine. We live in inner city north, about 3 miles from downtown, which is usually pretty safe from the storms.

I wish all my fellow OKCers were as lucky )

If you'd like to help, www.feedthechildren.org/tornado is great local source, the Red Cross as always, and if you'd like to do something fannish, I can personally vouch for SPNFamily Fundraiser through Winchesterbrothers.com, which has already raised over $400 for the American Red Cross of Central Oklahoma: SPNFamily donation.

Love to you guys, thanks for those who have sent emails and messages.

    1) I started watching Teen Wolf. I'm not really sure why. Actually, I think it was because Andrea, Brandi and CJ were and I wanted to have something to talk to them about, haha.

    2) It doesn't suck, as I assumed it would. I mean, I'd like characterization and metaphor, but I'll settle for lack of (even casual) homophobia, added shirtlessness and "WTF?!" (in a good way) reactions to every episode.

    3) CJ wants me to write fic for this show. This is most likely NOT going to happen. One, because I need something to either parody or meta in order to write, and this show already does one and doesn't really lend to the other. Two, I could never write Derek/Stiles for the same reason I rarely wrote Angel: I can't write characters who aren't composed entirely of dialogue. If I wrote fic for this show, it would probably be Scott/Jackson/Allison, haha!

    4) I loved watching BtVS (duh) because, while it was a high school show created when I was in my late 20s, David and James and Charisma were all older than I, and Nicky and Aly are close to my age. The mom on Teen Wolf is two years younger than I am. Ouch.

    5) I'm up to the 4th episode of Season 2 (yes, I paid for Hulu Plus to watch Season 2) and wow, did I not see some of this stuff coming.

    6) Tigh!

    7) Jonah starts ballet next Wednesday (he'll have it once a week for an hour while he's four). He's going to the school that Ballet Oklahoma draws from, so here's hoping he had talent and endurance. I get to go buy wee black tights and dance shoes today! (He chose ballet over gymnastics. Whatever -- exercise is exercise. And ballet is actually $5 cheaper a month, at least while he's four.)

    8) I really want to talk Teen Wolf with someone who wants to talk about Teen Wolf. Call me. Or email me at crazydiamondsue@gmail.com if you've lost my number. I don't know why I want to talk about it. I just do. And Vinnie gives me an indulgent "FML" when I try to talk about it; one, because she has no interest and two because I'm interrupting her mainlining of Big Bang Theory.

Road trip! We drove into Phoenix for our nephew's wedding and Jonah (who just turned 4!) went on his first multi-state road trip. All 3 Toy Story movies and he did fine. We stopped in Flagstaff where we bought his wedding outfit and he told me that he wanted to be stylish and "stylish boys wear bow ties to weddings." Sadly, there were no bow ties to be found at the Flagstaff mall, but I did hook him up with a suit vest, slacks and apricot shirt with coordinating Windsor knot tie, hah!

I tried to post this from LJ mobile, but the mountains were not in agreement.

Jonah has had a dip in one of the resort pools (it has a water park) and is now curled up on the couch watching Yo Gabba Gabba and eating a PB&J and fruit cup from room service because I'm a total pushover (and my SIL comped the room, so I can throw around $15 + tip for a PB&J and some strawberries).

    Eddie has food poisoning.

I am attempting to write a blog entry on unconventional friendships, i.e. those which began online: basically how I got one of my best friends 10 years ago via [livejournal.com profile] bloodclaim's beta reader sign-in sheet and how I got another by placing an ad on Craigslist for a scrapbooking buddy, haha! However, attempting to write about this experience for the edification of the average Facebooker causes Xander's "Oh, who CARES?!" outburst from Restless to pop into my head.

So instead I'm here, rambling into the void of what used to be an active Live Journal, about friendships and non-specific spoilers.

I was reading the Mark Watches recap of AtS's Dead End yesterday and marveled at Mark's admission that, prior to the ep, he was not aware that Christian Kane could sing. I was baffled by that, until I realized that I had been in Buffyverse fandom for years and live in Oklahoma so therefore have a bit of an advantage in that type of knowledge. Still, the "Christian Kane can sing? OMG WTF BBQ!" comments to the entry amused and charmed me, so I called the artist formerly known as adis723 to share. I burbled a pseudo-amazed, "Christian Kane can sing?!" at her and in a moment of breathtaking synchronicity she and I simul-chortled, "Cibo Matto can clog dance?!" at each other.

And that, my friends, is why I love my fannish peeps.

And now I'd like to talk about my experiences with spoilers in the "Game of Thrones" realm. None of this discussion has to do with specific spoilers and there will be no spoilers in the text of my rambling.

I blogged in great detail about our Disney trip (of course I did) so feel free to check that out if you're interested in my pic spam and Mouse tips! We paid for the trip (plus dining plan) and bought souveniers beforehand (except for some Disney only potato head accessories) and the only thing we used money for at the parks were gratuities! The Things:

  • Thank you to everyone who checked out my new blog and commented or liked it on Facebook. I was overwhelmed by the response to my dorkdom. Hearts!

  • We are leaving for Walt Disney World in 2 days! It's like the Mother Ship is calling me home!

  • Jonah picked out a hot pink Jeep Cherokee stroller to traverse the parks and is taking his plush Daisy Duck as his Plus One. Between tooling around in a hot pink ride with a duckette wearing lavender and pearls and being super excited about Cinderella's castle, I think my almost 4 year old boy is giving a big FU to traditional gender roles. Can I get a what-what? Of course, his mother will be standing alongside with precisely placed highlights, turquoise glitter polish (looks like town to me) and inches of tanned legs between short-shorts and platforms, looking like a fresh tube of lip gloss on Christmas morn, but we're both keeping it real.

  • I have been KNOCKED OUT by "Game of Thrones" and "Mad Men" this season, but woefully underwhelmed by HIMYM. I don't watch a lot of comedies (Community, 30 Rock, HIMYM & Big Bang) but when I'm finding Ted my favorite character, I think something's gone wonky.

  • My husband finished another semester of his doctoral program with a 4.0 for the semester -- his Admin in Higher Ed class was kicking his butt, super tough prof -- and now he only has 4 semesters to go and of course the dissertation. I'm incredibly proud of him as he balances his assoc dean / professor duties in a single income family and still has time to be an involved father and read everything I write and listen to what I overheard at the gym every day.

  • WHY did none of you tell me about "Revenge"??? I watched all aired 20 eps over 2 days. OMG the tawdry fabulous! I also caught up on "Girls" on HBO, and I have thoughts on it, but it needs its own post when I'm not packing and cleaning at the same time.

  • "The Avengers," in case you haven't heard, kicks massive ass. I don't know what Joss Whedon's thing is with schwarma ("I mean, what's that all about? It's a big meat hive!") but I like it. Oh, and if you've seen The Avengers, read this: Avengers Dissemble by [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds

  • Hi! Hi! I'm tripping protein bars and lots of Omega 3!

I have started a new Wordpress blog I have whimsically titled "Beyond Beans 'n' Tators" where I will share recipes and my healthy eating journey, as well as post the random observations that blurt onto my keyboard (see above re: blog). Each post will have a low-fat or healthy recipe I have vetted and things I've found useful in getting healthy, active and losing weight.

If you'd be willing to check it out and maybe leave a comment on at least the inaugural post, especially if I have poured piles of squeeing feedback on your fic and kitten posts for years (haha, shameless emotional manipulation) I would greatly appreciate. However, if you hate food and awesome, I get that, too.
