True Blood 4.2 You Smell Like Dinner and thoughts

As much as I've enjoyed writing the True Blood recaps, it's lead me to realize how 80s a lot of my references are, hahaha. In this past recap, I managed to reference James Spader (primarily in "Pretty in Pink"), Steel Magnolias (a constant with this show) and the Windsong perfume ads. There's some 90s (where my sensibilities typically lie) and millennial stuff but, damn, I seem to be going back to high school for this show. Part of it is that this show sparks my southern/redneck references (GWTW, Steel Magnolias, Designing Women, etc) many of which are heavily 80s. Stoney says the 80s are new again and people are just going to think I'm pop culture aware, but I think I gave the game away with the Windsong joke, haha.

We took Jonah to the carnival and fireworks show last night. He enjoyed the dragon and elephant carnival rides, but the little kid roller coaster freaked him out. Not as much as I freaked out watching him on it (he was riding with a 6 year-old friend) but that's going to be the last coaster for him until he's at least 5. Or least not one put up hastily by drunken carnies in a park. As far as the fireworks show went, he was entertained by the colors for the first few, but then far more interested in his popcorn (or "cockcorn," as he calls it.)

Today I think we're going to go to the small water park in Will Rogers Park since it's just the two of us (I'll go a lot of places with two toddlers, but water parks aren't one of them.)

I finished watching the first season of "Game of Thrones" and I am enthralled. I even like the characters I don't like (Theon Greyjoy, anyone?) True Blood is continuing to be crackilicious (more than usual) this season, but since that's all I expect it to be, we're both happy with the arrangement. Torchwood starts on Starz! this Friday and I can't wait to see the US version (with Jane Espenson on board!) although I'm going to miss Cardiff, not gonna lie.

I'm also reading Larson's "In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hiltler's Berlin" (I loved Larson's "Devil in the White City"). While I'm as cognizant of WWII Germany as any Gen X American non-scholar can be, I'm stunned at the things I'm learning about America's isolationist movement and the general apathy Americans had toward persecuted German citizens (Jews in particular) at the outset of the Third Reich. Sidenote: as I am reading this from my Kindle, Caza is also reading "A Clash of Kings: A Song of Ice and Fire" concurrently from the same Kindle, so it amuses me to pick it up and start reading only to think "What the fuck is Daenerys doing in 1930s Berlin? Oops, wrong book."

So, you know, I'm all cultured and stuff, what with my books and TV. Oh, and we saw "Cars II" Saturday night, so you may add the cinema, as well. ;)

Hahahaha -- it totally could have been cockporn! He told me this afternoon that the changing room at the pool smelled like cheese and cockcorn. I thought it smelled like chlorine and mold, but hey, to each their own.

I was terrified the first time either of my kids rode a coaster. Somehow I know I would have been even if they'd been 30 years old.

So you're liking the Kindle? I'm inching closer (very slowly) toward getting an e-reader. Tell me what you like and don't like about it!

Caza and I love amusement park rides and Jonah has enjoyed the kiddie size ones he's experienced, but he was covering his eyes on the rollercoaster (even though it was small) and looked terrified. Yikes.

I love my Kindle. I wasn't sure of it at first, because I'm home all the time and have my netbook to read pdfs and the like on, but when I realized I could buy books without leaving my house -- I was sold. So far I've read autobiographies by Tina Fey, Rob Lowe and Keith Richards with it and now the Erik Larson book plus the first two Game of Thrones books to go. I like the non-glare screen and that you can read it poolside if you want (and are careful.) Caza is going to buy his own soon, because the only thing I don't like about it so far is that we're having to share mine!

Awesome recap! Of course, I remember the 80's, so I'm good with those references.

As to Theon Greyjoy, yes, totally. I didn't like book!Theon, but show!Theon is oddly more interesting to me.

I only wish I had Starz! so I could catch Torchwood. Pardon me while I console myself with some cockcorn.

Yay, thank you! The Windsong thing makes me giggle whenever I think of it.

I think part of show!Theon's appeal are his weirdly intense eyes and his wispy 'stache. I kinda feel for him even when's going full-on douche.

My husband ordered Starz! just so that we could watch Torchwood, but he's enjoyed watching the movies with it, too. Cockcorn heals all woes!
