Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy:

You know the one: go to wikipedia, check out the "This year in film" lists, and pick one favourite for each year since you were born. (I chose the ones that were my favorites of that year at the time, or at least by 1980 (I'm not gonna lie and say I was all about "The Big Chill" in 1983. What 13 year-old cared about aging Boomers? I was far more into Rob Lowe and Matt Dillon in "The Outsiders." It wasn't until 1983 that I can remember seeing more than one contemporary movie a year, though.)

Sometimes the choices were obvious (I was honest) and sometimes they were weird.

1970 - Little Big Man
1971 - The Last Picture Show
1972 - Cabaret
1973 - The Exorcist
1974 - Blazing Saddles
1975 - Jaws
1976 - The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
1977 - Star Wars
1978 - Halloween
1979 - The Warriors
1980 - Empire Strikes Back
1981 - Mommie Dearest
1982 - Blade Runner
1983 - The Outsiders
1984 - Top Secret!
1985 - The Color Purple
1986 - Stand By Me
1987 - Raising Arizona
1988 - Dangerous Liaisons*
1989 - When Harry Met Sally
1990 - Paris Is Burning
1991 - The Silence of the Lambs
1992 - A League of Their Own
1993 - The Age of Innocence
1994 - Pulp Fiction
1995 - Tie: Sense and Sensibility and Clueless
1996 - Scream
1997 - Boogie Nights
1998 - Bulworth
1999 - Fight Club
2000 - Almost Famous
2001 - Tie: Y tu mamá también and LoTR
2002 - Far From Heaven
2003 - A Mighty Wind
2004 - Mean Girls
2005 - Brokeback Mountain
2006 - Pan's Labyrinth
2007 - Tie: Gone Baby Gone and Superbad
2008 - Iron Man
2009 - A Single Man (honorable mention to Brad Pitt in "Inglourious Basterds")
2010 - The King's Speech

*One of my favorite quotes is from "Friends" when Ross quizzes Joey & Chandler: "What does Rachel say is favorite movie?" Joey & Chandler: "Dangerous Liaisons!" Ross: "What is Rachel's ACTUAL favorite movie?" Joey & Chandler: "Weekend at Bernies!" I was a huge corset-film fan in my teens and 20s...DL WAS my fave, hee.

Still snowed in and Caza's off work again tomorrow!

There are some awesome movies on this list.

The last 3 films represent a group of maybe 6 films I've actually seen in the theatre over the past 3 years! Have you seen "The King's Speech" yet? What did you think? I loved it. Hugely emotional response the entire time.

I haven't yet, but I want to. There's a lot of Oscar pics I do not want to see. I don't care how great the performance is, watching someone cut off their arm is not entertaining.

I highly, highly reccommend True Grit.

I get around to seeing all Coen bros films, so I'm sure I'll at least eventually Red Box it!

Little Big Man

Any list that starts with (pre-"Rainman") Dustin Hoffman is a great list. I love that movie.

It seemed like it aired constantly on Saturday afternoons when I was kid. I watched it incessantly. I can still hear Faye Dunaway in my head as she bathes Hoffman: "Eyes averted, of course." I think that's where I learned the word 'averted.' Hmm. Loved your list. Like you, there so many I couldn't include.

I loved both Pan's Labyrinth and Brokeback Mountain but I couldn't watch them again. Damn you, power of fiction.

Though YAY for the Outsiders, though I have to say watching it aged 13 and watching it aged 16 had a big difference to how I viewed it - there was a lot more laughing at age 16 at certain parts.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth in the theatre THREE times. After the first, I always closed my eyes at that unexpected part when there is violence. You know the one. I saw Brokeback in the theatre twice and then I've bought the DVD and watched it once, and I always think I'm in the mood for it, but then I start thinking about it and just can't do it. I am, however, still always up for a good Brokeback parody.

I re-watched "The Outsiders" at 30 and was horrified. What is Tom Cruise DOING? How did Patrick Swayze ever get "Dirty Dancing"? Rob Lowe really isn't bad, though. And Diane Lane is pretty. Ah, but I loved the book!

I had the hugest hots for Matt Dillion when I was 16 but that scene in the end had me in hysterics - unlike when I was 13 and there was a mass (a gaggle? a giggle?) of girls all weeping about the place.

PL and BM were just SO SAD! I just felt like I'd been punched in the happy place and then had it set on fire. I'm really glad that I watched them, because fantastic movies, but my god they could have had at least one musical number and a picture of a puppy to end on.

I need to do this!

Related: I'm trying to watch Inception. Emphasis on trying. Everyone's mumbling! How was that a directorial choice?

Date: 2011-02-03 03:31 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
I can't do Inception. I can't do movies I need an Excel spreadsheet to follow, and Leo gives me the wig.

Unrelated: Are you watching OTH? Evidently, Dave Navarro was on a recent episode, causing a character to find him at (their?) residence and say, "What are you doing here...Dave Navarro?"

He's no Nick Lachey.

I am not a DiCaprio fan either. But my god, that movie. It is the only movie I have EVER gone back to see in the theatre a second time. I found it very very clever, on all kinds of levels, exciting, and visually yummy. And Leo wasn't half bad, actually, though JGL was the real squee-worthy character for me.
