NOTES
The hardest thing (in this world) about writing META is...not spelling it MEAT. I'm sure if you go back through the [livejournal.com profile] su_herald entries I edited, you're going to see a James Marsters interview listed below a heading of NEWS/MEAT/OTHER.

I was so very the most qualified person to do a sampling of the best of Buffyverse meta 2003-Present, since I'm known fandom-wide for my thoughtful canon analysis and 'ship equanimity. No. Wait, I'm known fandom-near for my humor and hair obsession (I will, however, stand by my 'ship equanimity.) But I have read a lot of meta, know a lot of smart people and kept a fairly linear memories list.

What I've listed above is by no means all Buffyverse meta, but it is still a pretty damn fine list if I do say so. What I attempted to compile was actual scholarly meta or at least well written personal essay, so there are no discussion posts [i.e. "I think Xander's a big tool. Questions? Comments?"], no memes and no polls (except that one.)

I am not new in fandom, and I know a reading of this list is going to spark reactions of, "How could you forget [Brilliant Essay] by [Total Genius]?" as well as "You included that [your expletive here]? Great, I thought I'd gotten over that angst in 2005." If you feel I've left something off (like, say, an utterly brilliant Cordelia character study that's not about how AtS S4 sucked) drop a note in the comments.

This list skews BtVS heavy. That's for two reasons: one, I love both BtVS and AtS, but I was far more fannish about BtVS. The other reason is that many of the writers/readers who wrote/rec'd AtS meta (at least the ones I, Metafandom and The Herald know of) have deleted or f-locked their journals. The episodic reviews do not begin to represent all that are available; they are, however, the episode reviews that most interested me and this is my list. YMMV.

In the interest of full disclosure: I am a Xander writer/reader first and foremost, so you will see equal character study for Xander as say, Buffy, and you will not find "Xander Harris Is a Tool" meta. In fact, I tried to make all selections on this post character bashing free and joyful. While I'm sure there's angst/wank fodder to be found, I didn't round up any het v. slash debates (you're never going to get the same answer) or 'ship wars or debates over what defines a drabble (there are no writing essays listed here at all -- those things are still being posted regularly.)

My last word on this post is that it was fun to relive the thoughtfulness of the Buffyverse. I poked through character, 'ship and essay communities. I combed memories archives from everyone I could think of in fandom. I read every edition of the Herald from 2004 to present. It was like that scene in AtS where Sahjhan catches Holtz up on the 20th century with the help of his History Channel VHS tape collection. Except much, much slower. Much, much slower.

I hope this brings back good memories for some and opens up new inspiration or food for thought for others. If, instead, I've merely wasted my time the past two weeks and no one but [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34 is remotely interested in thoughts from Buffyverse past...eh, I've wasted my time in far worse ways.

Final thought: if I have included anyone on this list who would prefer that a post they wrote six years ago and are totally over not be linked, just drop me a comment or email me at crazydiamondsue [at] gmail [dot] com and I'll remove it.

This post is AWESOME! Thank you so much for collecting all these links, and I'm so happy that they're all positive. I'm not much into negative meta, I love when writers dig deep into a hated episode or character instead of tearing them apart.

*goes to memories asap*

I'm not much for negative meta, either. I know reactions were strong and feelings ran high to a lot of storylines, but I tried to avoid any analysis that opened with: "Buffy is such a bitch!" There was still plenty of insight to be had. ;)

Have you read all of the Xander posts before? I don't agree with everything single thing in every single one (and that's the fun!) but there was a lot of good stuff there.

I read that when it was first posted, saved it, and I've re-read it twice while doing this list. It fills me such JOY. And when I went to link it, I typed in your username and was all, "Hey! It's my name twin!" I would have felt kind of abashed that so many of the people listed above are(or have been) on my reading/friends list, but I can't apologize for knowing such intelligent, nay, erudite people. It's kind of why they're my friends. ;)

I wanted to make it all shiny with wicked cool html, but time constraints and my techno-Amish skills...so no. No worries -- I know you have lots of RL stuff going on and it was Valentines weekend and stuff. Plus preparing for Comicpalooza!

I emailed a couple of my long time LJ friends with, "So I realized it's 2010, but can you overnight me detailed meta on X? No pressure!" Heh. Yes to Connor essays, please! AtS gave me the most trouble. Anything you write/link is much appreciated.

This is fantastic, and I'm so happy to see many of my favorites here! When I was at work earlier today I was thinking I should send you links to [livejournal.com profile] aycheb's meta (because I think about Buffy meta while I'm at work) just in case you weren't familiar with her, because I heart her "Buffy and Weapons" essay so much. Anyway, this is getting bookmarked for the next time I'm lacking in reading material, so thank you for compiling it!

[livejournal.com profile] molly_may was able to find a comprehensive analysis for me, but I'm shocked that there isn't, wasn't, more written about her. She's Cordelia Chase, people. (I was talking to Vinnie the other day and she was telling me that when she gets stressed at school or work she thinks, "I'm not just some whiny cry-Buffy -- I'm the meanest girl in school." It makes me smile.)

This seems like a great resource, especially for people who are new to the fandom.

I wanted to point out one omission: Our Lives Are Different Than Other People's (http://community.livejournal.com/ship_manifesto/2758.html), the Giles/Oz ship manifesto by [livejournal.com profile] glossing.

Oh, thank you! Glossing was my go-to on Oz, but I missed that one. And thanks, I would have loved to have something like this back in the early days, when I had no clue.

Thank you so much for sharing these! I've never seen most of them, and I can't wait to start reading! :D (Eeee, my ship manifesto made the list! *hugs you* *feels honored*)

You are welcome and I hope you find great things. I really enjoyed your take on Fred/Spike, too.

You are made of awe. Srsly.

This post goes to my memories, to be recced to all novices I meet on LJ and BtVS forums. Last year there was an influx of new blood into the fandom - people who watched Dollhouse got interested in BtVS and came to LJ. Your collection will help them to appreciate our fandom in all its glory. :)

(I have to say that I'm incredibly flattered to be included into your list).

Last year there was an influx of new blood into the fandom - people who watched Dollhouse got interested in BtVS and came to LJ. That makes me so happy!

I really enjoyed your 10th anniversary post, not only for its Joseph Campbell allusions but for the pure joy and appreciation you put into it. It made me happy.

Wow! Here from [livejournal.com profile] molly_may's rec and just wanted to say this is amazing and definitely going in my memories. I'm pretty much stunned that you've linked to something I'd forgotten I'd written :)

I'm pretty much stunned that you've linked to something I'd forgotten I'd written Hee! I did the same to a long-time LJ friend who IM'd me "When I did I write that? Wow, I'm smart!" I didn't get a chance to comment on a lot of the new-to-me posts I found (too busy with html) but I really enjoyed your analysis of "Becoming," particularly the idea of Angel as Dru's god and the contrast with Chosen. Lovely.

Ooh, that's a wonderful list--there are lots of things there I look forward to reading.

Back when season six was being aired, I remember a piece of Spike meta that got a lot of attention: Taming Spike, (http://www.newsgarden.org/chatters/homepages/alllie/taming.shtml) by Allie.
