I Keep Trying to Get Out...

...and they keep pulling me back in. So I gave a friend (who's always been very supportive of my writing) my website address because he wanted to see what I've been working on lately. Gulp. Okay, first of all, he's never watched anything from the Buffy 'verse and I tried to explain that he wouldn't get it. He insisted, and I'm never one to turn down fb, so I acquiesed. He's a gay man, so I figured some of the slash might intrigue.

He thought my little vignette Hair Like Chinese Silk was charming, but basically said, "Sue, why are you wasting your time with this? We've been telling you for years that you have the ability to make this a career, and you're never going to do that sitting around at 30 (I'm 33, so that was nice) writing stories about monsters." (Seemed to work okay for Joss...) So basically his thought process was "all this effort - nothing to show for it." Hey, I resent that - I've had squees aplenty!

It just kind of pulled me out of the B-verse and back into RL, which isn't always of the good. I've also been exploring aspects of my (former) RL, writing up a fic for [livejournal.com profile] nashmaveric . She wanted gay cowboys, so I dug my George Strait box set out and I've been stalking members of the IGRA (International Gay Rodeo Association) for tips. My first human AU, Angel/Xander will be roping its way toward you soon. So, country roads are taking me home, but things are not quite as I remember - hee! Please join me as I waste my time. Sorry, that'll be burnin' my ass for the rest of the night.

[identity profile] tgray.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't you dare take up RL writing! We like you in the B-verse! *grins* Although, a career would be rather cool too thugh... Hmmm.

And A/X human? LOL... sucked in and no turning back for you now!

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Sucked in!!! After I offered to write it, I said, "Um, did you want Angel: Vampire Cowboy, or human AU?" Vamp Cowboy would have been frickin' funny...but I think AU will be a better story. I'll just remember to share my vamp stories with people to whom I don't have to explain "chip/soul/trigger." *g*

[identity profile] tgray.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
chip/soul/trigger

Isn't it scary that we get that? LOL

[identity profile] spikendru.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Tsk, tsk. . .the first rule of fanfic writing is never give RL friends your website addy! Especially, if they're not Buffy fans! I once sent a non-Buffy fan to Sword and Stake, and I got, "Um, don't vampires kill people? Yours just keep having sex and, um, get into relationships, and why is Captain Jack Sparrow involved with vampires. that Angelus isn't a very nice person, is he? You used to write such good mysteries, why are you writing about that creepy Angelus? And, that's a stupid name, anyway!"

*snicker* OMG! Gay cowboys! You've made my night!

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, don't vampires kill people? Yours just keep having sex... Bwahahahaha! You know I love you, right? Yes, I've learned my lesson. No more pimping to RL. I really should be working on SMCD or the Xander ficathon due this month, but the gay cowboys have got me hog-tied and I'm down...

[identity profile] spikendru.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
but the gay cowboys have got me hog-tied and I'm down...

Get over here and download sisabet's Cowboy at once. You know you want to! It's. . .inspiration, yeah, inspiration, for the gay cowboys.

And, I'll even forgive a delay in SMCD if it means gay cowboys!

[identity profile] paperk8.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*shakes head*

I really don't expect anyone to understand. Writing is writing is writing. Every bit you do, if you're insightful at all, improves the whole. This realm is great for getting the essential FB about what works, otherwise you would be writing in a void. Because it's not like review boards do anything more than accept/reject.
*shrugs*
Exercise, baby. It's good. Would he rather have you writing tripe you care nothing about in order to try to sell it to a particular audience? The time is yours, the effort is yours. Do whatever you want with it, and I think working on your craft, however you need to do that, is time damn well spent.

*hugs*

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs you back* I really do think any kind of writing is a good thing. I can't ever repay the hours of entertainment I've gotten from my B-verse friends. We don't read this just 'cause it's Buffy, we read because of the incredible crafting of the stories. Great voices, plots, characterizations, settings...and aren't those part of any story? Okay, off to rope some gay cowboys - which will be a damn good story - fic or no! *lurve you*

Hmmm.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Sue, you know I think you are a terrific writer. I do not see writing as therapy. It's hard, and it sucks and it is incredibly fulfilling when the words come out right. I might be the only person haging out around here that sees it as a pasttime. As a diversion, as an excerise, as a way to educate your lover. "See? Read that part right there. Now do it to me." I can see why a RL person looks at you and says stop doing this non-paid thing and get paid for it.

There have been some intensive discussions about what makes good fanfic, badfic, etc. And I have come to the conclusion that some people need to step away from their fandom for a spell.

But when there is a story that needs to come out, you just get it out and make it right. I dunno. I'm getting sour on the elitism that seems to be running rampant in all things Joss. And why don't RL people get that you can (could? will?) do both? You most definitely should. You write amazing dialogue, and you are funny, and you make me see the people. Not many can claim that.

Well, I just alienated myself from just about everyone. Uh... dogs being eaten by eagles!! Come back.....
*sob*

Re: Hmmm.

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You couldn't alienate me with a crowbar, baby! He'll turn around when he sees the gay cowboy story (ah, yes he will.)

Yeah, there's definitely opinionation bulldoggin' the fic world.(Sorry, I'm just not backing off the cowboy metaphors.) But considering I've written more in the past 4 months than I have in the past four years...the fic burst of writing even has me dusting off that long laid aside novel and going, wasn't I going to be a writer when I grew up?

And you know, more dogs being eaten by eagles wouldn't be a bad thing...

Re: Hmmm.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
*Ptooey* *ching!*

Yup. Them words musta come outta ya 'cause you gots them fancy pants learnin. Best go use it, now. (Oh, and were you channeling a little Cheri O'Teri in that fic from our email? And when i say email, I'm talking about your man milk. And when I say man milk, I'm talking aboutcha seee-men.)

Rambling tastes like burning!

[identity profile] cityphonelines.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm at a loss for words... yeah, right, never.
Ok, 1st, no leaving the 'verse.
2nd, no leaving the 'verse!
3rd, this is something you do for fun, it's something that matters to you (and all of us), it's a hobby, y'know. How can someone basically tell you your hobby is a waste of time?
4th, no leaving the 'verse!!

Human AUs are a lot of fun and as your beta may I just say, "Gay cowboys!!"
:: happy chair wiggle thing ::

I should be put down with big bullets.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm*
HOBBY!! That's RIGHT. It IS a fun way to fill time and enjoy yourself. I was forgetting that bit what with everyone coming up with rules and why and why nots, and no AUs.

But they better not touch my Gay Cowboys. Sue, make one of the gay cowboys whip out his cock and yell "take a holt!" Bwah ha ha!!! Bull riding is HOTTXXX!! The extra Ts and Xs are for the extremely large cocks on the bulls. How those roosters got up there is beyond me...

Hee!! First crush!!

I think it's like a way of mocking when people are too excited to type 'the' correctly or even notice that they did it. At least, I think... *shrug*

Oh and BNF? I had to look it up, I was reading a thread and they all kept writing that. I was like, "WTF is BNF?" I am the google search queen, I will find anything. -booming voice-

I was feeling nostalgic, so I made me some new icons. . .

First love

Two Souls searching for each other
One spirit looking for the other
Caught between a hard hard place and a rock

You've pulled me out of my country-western purgatory! Yay, you! I went to see Rick a few years ago at our local amusement park. I made Caza go with. He was bored. He ate like, 4 corndogs and rode rides solo while I indulged my inner 12 year old. There were chicks there with scrapbooks of Rick (ah, pre-internet fandom!) and he was cracking me up, reading the quotes of some his old interviews with stuff like, "Acting is a current passion, but music is what really sets my soul on fire." And then he would say: "I never fucking said that!" My friend Neil's band got to play with him once and I asked how he looked and Neil said, "Sue - that man will be damn good looking corpse." *sigh*

Re: First love

[identity profile] spikendru.livejournal.com 2004-09-12 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah! He played in the Poconos a few years ago, and my husvand refused to go with me, so I drove to my daughter's school and picked her up and we went together and I had a blast. I put her in charge of the piccie taking, so I could just sit and bask, and she was sneaking around trying to get good shots (cause our camera? not the best) and I got a signed photo! Yay me!

It was appropriate that I took her with me, cause she didn't get to go the first time I saw him in concert! I was living in Phoenix, Az. at the time, and he was scheduled to play at the Az. State Fair on Oct. 24, so I immediately rushed out to get tickets. I was pregnant with her at the time, and when I found out my due date was Oct. 24th, I was really bummed! But Elena was very cooperative, and decided to make her appearance Oct. 5th, so 2 1/2 weeks later, we left her with my mother-in-law and went to see my Rick! And if that's not dedication, I don't know what is! Two hours on a bench with an episiotomy! Only for Rick!

Hee! You said Poconos! One of my favorite words...strangely. That story about your daughter was great.

Nah, not leaving the 'verse. Did you notice my shameless pimp of myself in the very post I pondered my fic writing? Hee...I'm shameless, when it comes to writin' fic...I'm so sorry. I've got to turn the country music OFF.

[identity profile] cityphonelines.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't apologize, yer talkin' to a born 'n raised Texan here. And the pimp worked; I scuttled off and read it. Loved it of course. I reckin' that reccin' yerself is jest fine by me.

Don't let grumpygayman put you down. He's always been bitter, bitter, bitter and jealous of your talent. You do what makes you happy.

Writing fanfic is being creative for yourself (and the plus side is the fb).

Don't let RL friends get in the way or your creativity.

I love you more than Twizzlers.

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you more than Nick Brendon's large upper arms. Mmm...Twizzlers....
The first time I replied to this, you were still logged on, so it looked like you were loving yourself, and rhapsodizing over Nicky's arms....hee!

Dude, I was sooo wondering about that. I thought hubby had come over the to the dark slash side. Grab [livejournal.com profile] spikendru and [livejournal.com profile] stoney321 and meet me at my journal in about 5 minutes.

Serious? You must have, like big boobies and stuff. I am totally going to put your hand in, like, cold water? And stuff? And you are going to totally wet your pants.

Dude, your brother is hot. HOTTXXX. The extra Ts and Xs are to indicate the level of hotness, which is, like, huge. And stuff.

You are so not standing. That would hurt your back to type, silly. You. Are. On. The. Computer.

[identity profile] cityphonelines.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, your brother is hot.
You wanna know why that's funny? I'm an only child... or is it childe?
Funnier? I looked around for the brother that does not exist.
The boobs they are large, however proportionate, I'm quite tall. They raise 'em big in Texan, y'know.

I was a 34 GG in my 9th month of each pregnancy. I know from tits. 'Cause I, too, am the Texan. We are prettier than other states. Like..... Um..... Arkansas? New Mexico? Louisiana?

(And it's CHILDER. WTF does that even mean? Leave Anne Rice and her playmates alone!!!)

Re: DOOD, AND STUFF!

[identity profile] cityphonelines.livejournal.com 2004-09-11 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*raises hand*
38 D or 38DD depends on the brand. My fear of pregnacy is the increase in boobage.

New Mexico's m'neighbor, be nice. Now, the the other states? You have free reign.

OK, completely out of the SNIFF loop here, but I was catching up on your plans to take over the RL publishing world (you know you're part of my morning routine, right?) and I was reminded of an article I read a few months ago in the Boston Globe. Apparently there's a new line of romance books targeted at the gay male audience but (surprise surprise) also bought by women. I'm not sure how *ahem* explicit they get, probably not very much, but they gave a small excerpt in the Globe (I do love my extremely liberal newspaper) and it seemed not bodice-ripping romantic, but kind of oblique, notice-the-details sort of thing. I guess if I had to compare that small paragraph to anyone in fandom it would be witling.

So all this is leading up to saying that while I really hope you don't abandon all of us here, there just might be an emerging market for people in this fandom who want to start actually being paid for their labors of love. The author profiled in the Globe was of course a gay man, but you know, the publishing house *should* take note of the fact that they do know, from survey data, that women are buying these books, and why not have women write them too?

Gay cowboys, my god. You are so funny, can't wait to see it. But what about SMCD????
(deleted comment)

SUE!!!!!!

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2004-09-12 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
You know you have to either kill that post, or her? SHe seems nice, though. Take only souls, leave on ly deleted posts. Let's cross stitch that onto to smart vests to wear.

Are you at church right now? Atheists get to sleep longer. Hee!

'Morning!! (You should be a big name gay male romance novelist. How fun would your 20 year H.S. reunion be?)

Re: SUE!!!!!!

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-12 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, anelith's cool. We're good. I have been at church. It was "Roundup Sunday" (see how even the Baptist world is cooperating with my gay cowboy obsession?) so I have had fried chicken made by Christian women and am considering a nap...

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-12 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Gay male romance novels...actually never thought of that...it's an idea!!! :::off to google:::
And I will never abandon! I will go down on this 'ship! (I so wish I had that icon) Thanks for all of your wonderful fb & comments.
I can't take credit for the gay cowboy idea, that's all nashmaveric. I just happened to jump on it. I won't neglect SMCD - it pretty much writes itself now that I've gotten over my smut fear. And S.N.I.F.F. are people I think are terribly funny.

Dude!

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2004-09-12 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
I go away for a day and y'all are inventing acronyms.

I still want a puma icon. . .can anybody think of a cool acronym that could be PUMA.

Sue, we talked in real life about the thing with your friend. I know he means well, but he knew what he was going to find when he went to that site. so why read all the stuff (just to act like he's openminded?) and then tell you it's a waste of time. that burns me. now personally, it never would have occurred to me to write fiction at all until I started writing fanfic. it's basically how I learned to write fiction. so. . . it balances out over time.

re: gay cowboys -- try to find the story "Brokeback Mountain" by Annie Proulx. this is basically a cowboy slash story that has been very well regarded and is probably going to be a Gyllenhaal/Ledger flick. now personally? i think the story sucks donkey balls. I think it's overblown and pretentious and can think of a dozen fanfic writers (including you!) who could do the same story better. it has the worst sex scene I've ever read. but somehow because it's written by a well known (and female) writer, it's got some kind of literary street cred. blah.

Re: Dude!

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2004-09-12 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
I was hip to the screenplay for "Brokeback Mountain." I'm thinking more along the lines of Larry McMurtry meets m/m slash....you're in with the SNIFF...check your email. And see Vinnie about the icon, she rocks.
