[livejournal.com profile] club_joss is discussing Without Ceremony by [livejournal.com profile] elenabtvs on my recommendation.

It's a post "The Gift" gen fic that details the moments leading up to Buffy's burial (building the coffin, preparing the body, Willow's trip to LA to tell Angel.) It's written first person in Willow's POV, and allows the reader to get inside her head. The characterization is flawless (all of the main characters are represented) and the prose is wonderful. It's everything I loved about "The Gift" and everything I wish had been in "Bargaining."

(It also led to me writing SMCD, so I could be a bit biased.) So there's a rec, if you'd like to read and discuss. Or just read, because I think it's worth it.

Thank you so much for the rec. I read it over lunch and it's really an amazing fic -- very moving, and it really made me wonder why they didn't deal with this stuff specifically in Season Six. 1 also can't help comparing it to a certain episode of a certain HBO show (but I can't say more without being spoilery for it).

Great rec! The one thing I never understood about S6 is why Willow kept insisting that Buffy was in hell. She had been a warrior of Light, and had no extenuating issues as they may have wondered about if it had been Faith. Why would they even think she had gone to hell? this fic nicely explains the behind-the-sceen reasoning.

I think they thought her soul had been trapped into one of the hell dimensions to which the portal opened, which made no sense, since her body, of course, remained. Although some cultures believe the soul leaves the body at the moment of death and it could have been drawn into the portal in that scenario.

Of course, it also doesn't make sense that Buffy fell face first, but ended up draped gracefully on her back. *g*

I'm glad you enjoyed "Without Ceremony" - it's one of my favorites.

SFU?

You're welcome - I'm glad you enjoyed. It's been one of my favorites since I first read it. And yes, I would have love to have the immediate aftermath to Buffy's death, but I guess they had other things to worry about (like switching nextworks and having the title star show up as soon as possible *g*)
