Final thoughts on Firefly 'til "Serenity" premiere...
Okay, remember a few days back when I commented that genre TV shows should have John Williams-esque orchestral theme songs sans lyrics? Slap me. I love that fucking theme song! Cannot get it out of my head! And Caza fast forwards through it! And each time I screech, "No! At least wait until after the revolving shot of Mal and Zoe with their rifles drawn!"
So since I didn't get into the Jossverse (or become a Whedonist, however you worship) until Summer 2003, one of the reasons I didn't rent/borrow/buy Firefly was because I blamed it for the things I didn't like about Buffy S7 and Angel S4. Dammit, if Joss hadn't been off indulging his cowboy!kink, this scenario/plot point/character's hair would have blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, I'm over that. I'm over most of my irks about B-S7 and A-S4, too. (Although I'll never be over Spike's Mystic TanTM in "Sleeper." Never!!!)
Ahem. Anyway, Firefly. I have loved Nathan Fillion since he was Joey Buchanan on "One Life to Live." That was at some point during my long and varied undergrad career, and he was 19 and banging Dorian Lord (NF and I are the same age, and she was like 50 when I was born) and
uberaeryn and I watched and said, "Ewww...that's hot!" Point? Here, point? Anyway, I knew he would be one thing I liked about Firefly.
And he was. But I didn't realize how quickly Joss could hook me with characters. If I had only seen Season 1 of Buffy, would I have cared about Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles that quickly? Possibly. But what if "Prophecy Girl" hadn't aired and my last moments were with that puppet thing...er. Hmmm.
So. Loved it - loved the concept, the execution, the CGI (which I normally hate - I'm all about the people, dude), loved the interactions between the characters. Loved it to full fandom status? Well, no. I don't really do fandom. Oh, stop laughing and there's no need to point me toward my fics and website. And icons. And stuff.
Buffy was my first fandom, and I didn't do that until I was over 30. I don't normally care that much. I'll watch a show/movie, quote some dialogue, know some trivia, sure. I’m a dork. But get to the point that I read/write fic, troll fan websites and can name every episode title and give a concise summary of the plot of said episode? No. I can't even do that for Angel. I'll never care that much again. Buffy struck a chord in me that's unequalled. I've never experienced obsession on that level, and I'm southern with a family history of fixation.
But I do mourn Firefly now, for what it could have been and what tiny bit of brilliance it got to be. And I look forward to Serenity's premiere with far more fervor than someone who just said she doesn't really do fandom should.
If you haven't watched Firefly, this part includes spoilers, so you might want to skip. And if you haven't watched Firefly and you're reading this...god, you must love me! If so, now you can just add confused to bored. Because I want to know! About River and the blue hand guys and Mal and Inara and Book's past and will Kaylee ever just frickin' kiss Simon? Because you can't tell me a chick who was banging that Sawyer-wannabe (okay, Sawyer didn't exist yet - still) behind the engines can't go after some lip-lock herself. Christ! Or will she give up on Simon and mack on River? Will Jayne ever find gold? Where can I get his t-shirts? I want Inara's shuttle while we're at it. What will Mal's pants look like on the big screen? *swallows tongue*
But just remember: no new fandoms. I mean it.
So what do I watch? *shrug* Big bunch o' nuthin'. "Arrested Development" is probably the closest thing to an obsession. (Of course it is - I love walking Fox's razor's edge of show cancellation.) "American Idol" - primarily for the audition process and Simon. (Go Bo!) Hmmm. "The Daily Show." "The Simpsons." "South Park." "Queer as Folk." (Okay, for that one I do lurk through fic.) *squints, thinks hard* That's about it.
Wow, you say. That's certainly some challenging and intellectually stimulating television. Shut it, I say to you. I've only been into "Buffy" (fandom wise) for a little more than a year. So I'll still be over here with my Spike action figure that comes with pole, beer and chicken wings long after you all saunter past me on your way to the new Cool-ville.
God, I miss Joss. And our dead gay shows. Is there going to be a "Serenity" sneak peek in Texas? Anyone know? I know Oklahoma won't get one. We only sneak peek "Faces of Death III" and "Ernest Goes To..." movies.
So,
karabair. Happy? :)
