I'M CLOSING ON MY HOUSE TODAY!!!
elcazavampiros and I will be throwing our sofa cushions on the floor tonight and sleeping in in OUR NEW HOUSE! It may even involve cheap champagne and hot monkey love -
you don't know! It won't, however, involve
uberaeryn, who is blowing off New House Day in favor of drooling all over Keith Urban tonight. *jealousy poorly disguised as disdain*
And now, because Spam is gross: Like, six posts in one!
I dithered over posting this, because I couldn't include everyone I wanted to include, and then I didn't want it to be just one long wanky list of names of people I like, so I gave my listing a theme - Me!!! (I might act all Willow - goofy and supportive on the outside - but underneath, I'm pure self-involved Buffy. Ask anyone.) These are the writers who made me want to write fanfic, shaped my OTP and that I've spent the better part of my short tenure as a fic writer slyly ripping off...
uberaeryn. Without her, there would be no
crazydiamondsue, and that would just be a bloody fucking tragedy. Er, right? She forced me to watch this stupid sounding show about teenagers and vampires and held my eyelids open with clothespins so that I couldn't turn away from acknowledging the hotness that is Giles, Angel, Spike, Tara...(Fanfic taught me the hotness that is Xander.) And I'll be unabashedly honest: I thought the idea of fanfic was the stupidest, most geek-o-rama idea I'd ever heard of when she mentioned it. *cough* Yeah, that opinion lasted until about 10 seconds after my first piece of feedback. Oh, shit, this is supposed to be about Aeryn.
Or as I call her - Kathy. She was the first writer I ever acknowledged with the ultimate compliment ("Hey! You're better than
me!) and her writing rekindled my fandom love when my fic flame started blowing in the wind. If you love Spangel, AtS or even just really well written plotty slash and you haven't read
Fading - well, that's just wrong. I mean, the woman subverted on of my biggest squicks (Giles/Scoobies love) and made me love Buffy/Giles. Guffy! She made me a Guffy lover!!!
karabair. Carrie is one of the smartest people I've ever known (which is why I like to tell everyone I was one of her life lines when she was on "Millionaire" - and there's the mention of me in this tribute, in case you missed that) which is why I always found it terribly amusing that her sig quote on her very astute emails about politics, religion and literature was some actor named James Marsters talking about Chekov and
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
karabair wrote the very first piece of fanfiction I ever read and has the distinction of being the person to mention Spike/Xander to me in a humorous aside, creating what some could term an obsession...
Much like
uberaeryn,
karabair can write any character, any pairing, but is perhaps best known for having a fantastic Wes voice. She's done so much fantastic Wes, in fact, it was hard to determine my favorite. And then it wasn't that hard when I remembered that I'm the shallow, smutty one, and her Cordy/Wes
winter_of_wes entry,
And Other Strangers, while certainly not shallow, is smutty in that good, down low tickle kind of way.
uberaeryn and
karabair introduced the concepts of Buffy, fanfic and live journal, and amused me with the giggle-pointing at this phenomenon called Spander, but it was someone else who made me stop giggling.
secondverse wrote the first slash fanfic I ever read that made me go...wow, real writers are writing fanfic??? (Excepting
karabair and
uberaeryn, of course, because I know them in RL and have seen them in their underwear and also very drunk and therefore they can't be
that awe inspiring anymore. Ahem. Continuing with Yin.) Yin's fic "Long Time Gone" did several things: It made S/X my OTP (before I even knew what OTP meant), it made me suddenly realize how freakin' hot Xander was (I had honestly watched the speedo scene going - eh, Xander, cute. I must have been under a de-lusting spell) and she made me write the most gushing, fangirly feedback email I think it's possible to create (it didn't have rainbow colored hearts and unicorns, but only because I don't know how to use Photoshop.) I hope she didn't save it. She showed me that fanfic could utitilize prose, allusion, symbolism - and let's face it - proper grammar and spelling - and this passage from LTG:
Spike broke the kiss and panted harshly. He twined one hand into Xander’s hair and roughly pulled his head back so that their eyes met. “Luv, I’m going to have to apologize in advance,” he gritted out between pants. “For what?” Xander’s breathing was also unsteady. “For how fucking sore you’re gonna be tomorrow.”May, possibly, have been my first braingasm
TM-Lazuli. And when it comes to thinky-fic and the consequences of our actions, "In The Shadow of Kilimanjaro"
Part One and
Part Two gave me Yin-envy. In the end, she made Spander resonante for me on a level beyond the fact that I found them both hot and amusing. Not to mention that her offhand comment, "So, whatcha gonna write now?" turned into Sunday Morning, which, you know, gave me a flist...
Okay, I was gonna do this all in one fell swoop, but Caza's here to take me to the signing! A signing! A signing!
So, coming soon:
spikendru
dovil
darkhavensI know, the anticipation of how I will work myself into descriptions of their greatness is killing me, too!
