I think it's like a way of mocking when people are too excited to type 'the' correctly or even notice that they did it. At least, I think... *shrug*

Oh and BNF? I had to look it up, I was reading a thread and they all kept writing that. I was like, "WTF is BNF?" I am the google search queen, I will find anything. -booming voice-
