Thank you so much and your icon brings me joy! And thank you for the LJ writing comment, too. Here's the secret to what I've found to be a successful non-fandom LJ post:
1) Find yourself endlessly fascinating, but with a mix of confidence and deprecation. You want your reader to think, "Aw, she doesn't know how awesome she is!" Heh. 2) Confess to tl;dr (too long, didn't read) up front and your reader will forgive you. 3) Steal or, that is, use your allusions: above there are references to Steel Magnolias, BtVS, AtS, The Breakfast Club and stuff I've quoted for so long I've forgotten what I'm homaging. 4) She who laughs first...you know how it goes. 5) Read lots of magazines. After a while osmosis kicks in. You'll sound like a mishmash of Details, Salon, Cosmo and Newsweek, but that's okay - people will think it's a unique writer voice.
Hah - seriously, I have no idea. I love to talk, I love to write, and I just blurt whatever comes to mind. And put quasi-clever mini-headlines on it. :)
