My Smash recap is up at Hey Don't Judge Me: The Coup

Every episode should have Derek rattling Tom around until Tom's bangs go all Flock of Seagulls, don't you think?
crazydiamondsue: (OK State of Mind)
Having exhausted (I think) a lot of the well-written HP fic I could find on AO3 (that was a lot of reading) I consulted my saved fic links and ended up re-reading an SPN RPS AU that is very AU (the only kind of RPS I'm into) and clicking subsequent links lead to me to new fic and I've been reading a lot of new to me J2 AUs this afternoon. One such fic ended in a note from the writer (a Brit) asking for American (particularly Texan) readers to Ameri-pick for regional or linguist errors. The main thing that tends to throw me out of J2 fic is "Texan" food that is neither Texan nor remotely palatable in combination (enchiladas served with chicken fried steak has got to be the winner in that category.)

So I left a comment about a few dialogue choices (meant vs supposed; "Let's go back to mine" "Don't mess me around, yeah?" etc) that didn't sound particular Texan or US southwestern and then commented that having Jared long for his mother's chili served with Madeira cake was a little odd. We tend to have chili with cornbread or Fritos around these parts, and the likelihood of a Texan having Madeira cake as a fave would probably suggest an English mother or grandmother.

The author commented back very cordially, but commented that she was under the impression that cornbread was not something people ate anymore and she was leery of its racist connotations. Um. What?

And now this post will go all over the place )

The Workshop

You know, I feel bad for absolutely everyone in this ep. Except me. I got to see Bernadette Peters.

So I have been reading the Mark Watches recaps of Buffy and Angel and for most part it's the same super fun that is watching the show anew with a new person. I typically have to skip the comments, though, because of the random Xander hate (it's even worse than the vintage Xander hate I'm immune to) and because A LOT of these new viewers seem SUPER young and are hyper sensitive/triggered by anyone saying anything sexual to anyone ever.

However, after today's recap of "The Initiative," a new viewer commented on the fact that you can briefly see Spike's reflection in the glass in the Initiative holding cells. They went on to say, "I realized that was a technical error, because at first I thought he was supposed to be a ghost, and he's already undead, so it would just be silly if he were a ghost."

Ahahahahahahhaha. Indeed.

So now I'm sitting here with a goofy grin on my lips, shipping Spike/Willow, calling Jonah "my little mentholated pack of smokes" and thinking of the baby Buffies, "You think you know ... what's to come ... what you are. You haven't even begun."

My Smash recap is up at Hey Don't Judge Me. I still don't know what I think of this show...loved the pilot, but I've been up and down over it since. It's winning its time slot, so perhaps it's my adherence to niche and cult programming that's the issue, haha! Feel free to tell me what you think or just go over and comment random stuff about musicals. I'm cool with that.

Just a note that I'm doing the "Smash" recaps at [livejournal.com profile] stoney321's website Hey Don't Judge Me. I just posted the recap for 1.3 "Enter Mr. DiMaggio," if any of y'all are as big a Broadway geek as I am!

Does anyone know of a Johnny/Baby coda fic for "Dirty Dancing"? Anything for Yuletide? Or know where I would suggest? I have a friend looking for DD fic. I don't read anything but genre TV fic & HP, so I am no help.

Otherwise, I am fine, nothing new. Busy with the boy, getting healthy, reading HP fic (I'm embroiled in Hermione/Snape, currently). Hope you're all having a healthy & happy new year!

We just had our 2nd earthquake in 24 hours in Oklahoma! I missed the 2 am one, but this one shook so hard my china cabinet shimmied and our light fixtures swayed for several minutes. Everyone I know in the state is on Facebook talking about it...250 updates of "Hey...did y'all feel that?" haha!

I still exist! I just, you know, got sucked into Facebook. I'm sorry -- I have lots of friends from high school and college who don't suck. I've lead a charmed life, haha.

Things and Whatnot

1. My netbook is jacked up because my child spilled water in the keyboard and I have no shift or control keys. I capitalize with capslock and copy and paste from the character map. I know, I should just contact the Geek Squad.

2. Caza had his second back surgery -- a repeat discectomy -- 3 weeks ago. He just started feeling normal again on Sunday. He took 2 1/2 weeks off of work, but he still had his Phd program. He's been stressed, let's just say.

3. Jonah started preschool and, while he seems to be the mean kid who kisses the girls and makes them cry, which is SUPER AWESOME -- dripping with sarcasm -- he is learning a lot. Mainly a lot of cute songs, but he sings them note for note. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates? Morons.

4. I joined a gym and dug out my Pilates mat and I've lost 50 lbs, going from a size 16 to a size 6. I still have 20 lbs to go -- keep in mind that I'm barely 5'1'' with a small build, I don't have unrealistic goals -- but I feel great and am on track for my 'don't die at 58 like your mom' endgame.

5. I am going to see Stoney in a few weeks. We don't know what we'll get up to, but it will involve sexy shoes, a lot of hair tossing and booze. I still call Cityphonelines every night and talk about everything we did all day.

6. I also still read a lot of Harry Potter fanfic. Rodeo got nominated for several awards at some award site a few weeks ago -- let the AU cowboys die, fandom. We watched 'Grimm' and liked it...I still quote Buffy every day...Cityphonelines is writing the SPN recaps at Hey Don't Judge Me and they're hilarious...I watch SPN in syndication at my gym, and that's my fannish life. Oh, and I'm newly obsessed with The Big Bang Theory. And I still watch lots of hockey, mainly the Canucks, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Dallas Stars. Not to mention Oklahoma City's own Barons...we're known for our winter sports, haha.

Now...how are y'all?

True Blood recap is up: 4.7 Cold Grey Light of Dawn.

It was wicked hard making this very serious episode funny, but I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints. God. When did my references get so dated?

Did y'all know that almost three years ago, I had a baby? I might have mentioned it once or twice, haha. He's going to be THREE on the 15th, as much as that shocks me. Here's an excerpt from his birthday portraits:

4.3 If You Love Me, Why Am I Dyin'?

4.4 I'm Alive and On Fire

We had a rough week this week. Our air conditioner went out during a 105 to 110 degree heat wave. It was 96 degrees in our house at one point! We know a guy who knows a guy, though, and he was able to come out and redneck-rig it so we didn't have to get a new compressor ($2000) just yet. The heat caused Jonah to get sick the first night, and then I ended up a the doctor's office with high blood pressure -- I've always had low! The doctor said it was just stress, but I was light-headed and cruddy feeling for days. So I've just now got my True Blood recap from last week, along with this past Sunday, posted.

It's been a rough week and I still haven't gotten to see Deathly Hallows 2 due to child care and wonky schedules. So go read my recaps and leave me feedback or like it on Facebook, please. What? Too much? :)

Oh, True Blood. My sweet, sweet vampire crack. I've just posted my reviews for Season Three comprehensive and last's night episode, "She's Not There" at Hey Don't Judge Me.

True Blood - 4.1 She's Not There

True Blood - Season Three

Now I don't want to type vampires, boob glitter or tank top for a week. I'm so excited that [livejournal.com profile] stoney321 gave me this opportunity (and proud of myself for accomplishing more writing than I've done in almost 4 years) but I am exhausted after a solid week of reviewing and writing and, you know, finding the funny that I am shagged out.

On a sad note, my beloved little weenie dog Max escaped from our yard last night and we haven't been able to find him. He's almost 10 years old and is very much a house dog. I appreciate any positive thoughts y'all could send his way, we're just heartbroken.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy:

You know the one: go to wikipedia, check out the "This year in film" lists, and pick one favourite for each year since you were born. (I chose the ones that were my favorites of that year at the time, or at least by 1980 (I'm not gonna lie and say I was all about "The Big Chill" in 1983. What 13 year-old cared about aging Boomers? I was far more into Rob Lowe and Matt Dillon in "The Outsiders." It wasn't until 1983 that I can remember seeing more than one contemporary movie a year, though.)

I usually do one of these at least one a year. This one is stolen from [livejournal.com profile] sweptawaybayou

1. Pick 15 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Strike out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions.

So I was on Facebook (like I do) inviting a friend to come over some time this week to watch "Pangs" in observance of Thanksgiving, when a mutual friend chimed in with, "Buffy? Sue, you're still watching Buffy??" to which I replied, "So? I watch the Halloween episode on Halloween and I watch the Thanksgiving episode on Thanksgiving. If I were ever to resurrect some ancient evil, I'd probably watch "Inca Mummy Girl" in observance of that!"

My heckler replied in what he no doubt felt was a conciliatory fashion, "Well, you might be a geek, but at least you're not a nerd!" To which I answered, "Let's not be so hasty. I still know the date and time of the Battle of Hastings and I can name all 50 US States in alpha order in less than a minute and the chapters of the New Testament in chronological order in less than 30 seconds."

His rebuttal? "So you're less of a nerd, and more of an annoying 5th grader."

Touché. <~~ secret nerd code

I haven't made a recipe post in 4-EVER! Mainly because, in the time it took to type this up, I had to say "Quit it. Stop hitting him, Jonah. Give that back. Can't you share? Who threw this? Why is this sticky? WHERE ARE YOUR SOCKS???" So...yeah.

This is our menu for the week (although I didn't realize that I had planned to make both Dilled Pot Roast and Pork Schnitzel in the same week, so I will probably just make a traditional pot roast with potatoes and carrots.)

Comfort Food )

Remember, as always, that I am not a vegetarian and I never met a starch I didn't like.
