crazydiamondsue: (BTVS Old School)
Oh, Brits in Teen Wolf fandom, you're killing me with your "proper" and "whilst" and "meant" and "shall." I know you watch scads of American TV, surely you've noticed that we don't talk like that? You rarely boggled me this much with SPN fic (other than that one time that Jared and Jensen ate chicken fried steak and enchiladas together, but non-Texan-Americans are often clueless about the Lone Star state, so I gave you a pass). Let me put it this way, by the time you write Stiles or Derek saying, "I'm meant to be back at uni in a fortnight, so shall I give you a proper kiss whilst we ring for a curry?" we're no longer in California.

Although I did laugh for 15 minutes in the midst of a HS AU while Stiles appreciated the fact that his high school cafeteria did a decent curry. Wow, that Michelle Obama really DID spruce up the fish sticks and Jell-O! Well, it was a welcome break from curly fries and coffee shops, I'll say that for it.

Oh, man. This.

It truly makes me miss Buffy and its canonically English characters. "Whilst," Tabi!!! I can forgive a lot, and know that were I writing Sherlock fic, I'd make picky mistakes, too, but Americans haven't said "Whilst" since the Monroe Doctrine!

Date: 2013-09-21 12:56 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] tabaqui.livejournal.com
Dude. I know! Every time i see that kind of thing, i just have to shake my head and then say 'bye bye' to the fic. I just *cannot*. Boot, torch, jumper, lolly.... Please *stop* making Dean say these things!

I bless dearest [livejournal.com profile] darkhavens for being the best beta ever and making sure my Spike and Giles sounded like...Spike and Giles. Heh.

Date: 2013-09-21 01:29 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] moonpupy.livejournal.com
And, and, and, even if they have an American check the story for Brit-isms, it's like they stop reading halfway through the story. BLAMMO! Brick-walled out of the story. And, then, if it's good enough to continue reading? The "whilsts" and "take-aways" and "having a showers" get thicker and thicker until I just can't wade through the shite. Darn their arses!

Date: 2013-09-21 01:37 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
it's like they stop reading halfway through the story YES!!! Sometimes I wonder how familiar the Americans chosen to beta are with modern Brit voice? It's like they're unaware that 'meant' rather than 'supposed' is British English, or completely unaware of what a fortnight or a curry or a pair of trainers are. It really makes we want to write Dr. Who fic where all of the characters speak in my native southwestern, y'all.

::moans in agreement::

Yes, ooooh, yes.

Or BBC Sherlock. Or The Professionals. Oo! Oo! Or Merlin!

Or any other popular British show that I don't actually know because I've lost BBC America and I don't tend to watch British dramas and even though I love their comedies I have no way of writing for them because I refuse to slash Rodrick and Blackadder. ::shudders::

Hahaha, I miss Blackadder.

I've gotten in trouble for saying this, and read a new-ish SGA story in the past week that had John Shephard sounding like a member of the RAF and had to stop because it hurt my head.

It's an infinitely worse OOC marker than who somebody dates, is what I say.

Julia, also a sign of coming major culture shock if they ever come here.

Date: 2013-09-21 02:20 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
I know in Teen Wolf fandom that youth excuses a lot of the most egregious mistakes (not seeking a beta or Ameri-picker, not doing basic research), but what I find baffling about your SGA story is how easily that would researched in the show's own canon (or Wiki) without even resulting to *the horror* Google.

And in fairness to Brits, there are many, many fantastic stories in multiple fandoms that I would not have suspected the writer (in an American set fandom) to be non-American were realise not spelled with an 's'.

It wasn't even the caf', darlin', it was the CANTEEN. But I didn't include that because I already felt like a horrible person for braying like a jackass at curry in the hot lunch line, snerk.

I will say this in my defense: I will beta for anyone, anywhere, and if I ever write Harry Potter fic where the Weasleys are eatin' grits and gravy and country ham and goin' to church on Sunday for dinner on the grounds, all may point and mock and laugh. (And yes I just quoted Dolly Parton and Buffy in the same sentence. You know my influences.)

Yes, but do you have any Sterek recs?

Preferably AU ones where Derek is nothing like he is canonically, in that he makes sense as a character and is sympathetic?

Date: 2013-09-22 01:53 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
Does he have to both make sense *and* be sympathetic? Haha. I marvel constantly at canonical Derek Hale. I actually kind of enjoy it...everything from the 25 year old surrounded by teenagers he doesn't really like to the fact that when he asks questions it sounds like, "What." to the fact that he had TWO horrible relationships by the time he was 16 and STILL looks shocked when people screw him over.

I actually do have a few decent Derek AUs, I will troll my AO3 bookmarks and send them your way. I can't make promises. Honestly, with this fandom my criteria is: 1) Was it hot, 2) Did they sound American (OMG it's worse in this fandom than ever), and 3) Was there a plot beyond "Derek and Stiles are both in love with each other, but because of some sort of misunderstanding involving NOT USING WORDS, they break up or never get together only to find that -- OMG, wait for it, y'all -- they've BOTH been secretly pining for each other all long!" <~~~ I wish I could put this in blinking neon, because it is trufax, no lie, the main plot of 90% of all Sterek fics.

Yes. I don't feel like that's really asking for a lot, you know?

everything from the 25 year old surrounded by teenagers he doesn't really like to the fact that when he asks questions it sounds like, "What." to the fact that he had TWO horrible relationships by the time he was 16 and STILL looks shocked when people screw him over.

Okay, all of this is canon and great. The ingredients are all there. Those ingredients are basically the makings of all of my favorite heroes ever. But because this show is really quite godawful, they never explain why he is this way or what he really thinks about things or what he really wants, which makes him really just looking like a horrible asshole who goes around getting kids killed and not really taking responsibility for anything.

I can't make promises.

I have read a lot of Sterek AUs. A lot. I understand this statement.

it is trufax, no lie, the main plot of 90% of all Sterek fics.

Yes, and I agree it's stupid. But one thing I really enjoy about the pairing is that they both have confidence issues, but not in straight forward ways. I mean, Stiles is really brave and not afraid to say what he thinks, but he spends a lot of time pining over a gorgeous, moody, rude person who doesn't really pay him that much heed. Meanwhile Derek has been kind of horribly abused from multiple angles. I feel like there could be an awesome fic in which they don't talk about their issues, and it is completely comprehensible, you know?

That said, a month or so ago I found a prompt on a TW kink meme that was basically, "Derek thinks the reason he fucks up everything all the time is because he doesn't talk about his feelings, so he's determined to talk to Stiles about ALL the feelings even when it's really hard and he doesn't know how to say it, and Stiles is really, really patient with him." And I have 20,000 words of it written that I'm never going to finish, but apparently it's what my brain wanted.

...I don't actually mind the Britishisms that much. It's way worse in SPN fic, imo, because SPN feels a lot more like it's about America, and also SPN is (okay, used to be; S7 on is crap) a lot tighter about its mythology and world-building so I feel really jerked out by Britishisms in SPN. But TW is all over the place anyway, so I don't even care.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:20 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
But TW is all over the place anyway, so I don't even care. I can totally see that viewpoint. I think my biggest problem is that Derek says so few words that when most of them are fortnight and whilst and advert, it just makes me tired.

I don't pretend to begin to understand canon Derek Hale. I don't understand how one character can have so many of these elements (fire, dead family, Kate, Paige, Laura, resurrected!Peter, resurrected!Cora, Scott, Jennifer, Isaac/Boyd/Erica) and for me to STILL understand so little about them. I knew more about Jonathan in 2 episodes of Buffy.

But hey, any show that dumps an iconic character identifying car (yes! He's mostly identified by his car!) just because they change corporate sponsorship is a show I sort of expect to disappoint me. SPN has often disappointed me, but I found so much fic to make up for it. I think I've just read too many TW fics...they're all starting to sound EXACTLY the same. I would to read a fic (especially by you) where Derek was forced to communicate. I would love that beyond the telling of it.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:35 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lettered.livejournal.com
SPN has often disappointed me,

Really? Seasons 2-5 are some of the most magnificent tv out there, imo. And most of the fic I don't care all that much about.

I would to read a fic (especially by you) where Derek was forced to communicate. I would love that beyond the telling of it.

It's bad. It's bad because I'm not writing it for public consumption and I never planned on finishing it. It is literally like 20k of Derek trying to get words out and failing. But I would send you what I had if you wanted.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:40 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
I should have qualified my SPN disappoint as the seasons post Season 5. I still watch it, I just haven't cared since Season 5. By the time the show killed off Bobby and brought him back as a ghost, I was emotionally done. But I will always love the first five seasons, and I will watch it until the last episode flickers off. I have a deep and frightening love of pre-series Sam/Dean (Dean teaching Sam to drive, etc) and then a huge love of all J-squared AUs, especially college AUs. I don't care much for true J2 RPS, but there was a while there where if Jensen was a kindergarten teacher and Jared was a podiatrist and they met in the jams & jellies aisle of Whole Foods, it was my best day ever.

Date: 2013-09-22 03:05 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lettered.livejournal.com
Ah. Yeah. I actually loved Robo Sam but the second half of S6 fell flat and I haven't cared since. But like you, I still watch.

I can't deal with Sam/Dean. You know me--I love me some incest--I'm the one who wrote Captain Kirk/his mom--but Sam/Dean is TOO SAD. It's way too sad. And a lot of the pre-series gen is not sad enough. I do LOVE some of the stuff by kroki_refur because they did some gen that was super sexually charged, a lot like the show...but then I just wanted more show. OMG that show. I can't even deal.

And yeah, J2 RPS! You know, I started writing some once, and my favorite part was actually Chad Michael Murray. Which I find hilarious. But yeah, I never wanted to read real J2 rps. Just Happy Trees Jared and the like. (Did you read that one? Jared is Bob Ross and Jensen is an ex soap star who lazes around just watching Jared paint all day IT WAS SRSLY THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER. EVEN. HAHAHAHHA I love this world.)

Date: 2013-09-22 02:42 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
And yes please to sending me what you have!! I have a love of Derek trying to find words.

Date: 2013-09-22 03:06 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lettered.livejournal.com
okay. I think the problem was that once I started it I wanted to explain ALL MY FEELINGS and it got really bogged down and stupid. But I'll send it to you.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:10 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
No Aphrodisiac Like Loneliness
I really enjoy Derek in this one, mainly because he's had the chance to grow up. However, it's a magical-happy-pack fic and the main plot is, again, if Derek or Stiles had bothered to say "Tell me about it, Stud," just once to each, the entire plot would have ground to a halt. I really like Stiles's grown up life and OMC love interest (as an idea).

Dating Backwards
Probably my favorite porn star AU of all time (and I'm not big on porn star AUs). Possibly because Stiles thinks Derek is BAD at werewolf porn and I think that's hilarious. It also wins for having THE most overt "Wait, you were in love ME? I was in love with YOU!" scene. And hot.

The Great Pretender
50s AU. I had some issues with the authenticity of her 50s 'verse here, but mainly because Stiles's jive talk (while deliberately over the top) reaches "Airplane!" levels of parody at times (and possibly because my parents were from the 50s and my hometown had changed little from the 50s when I was a kid, and this feels very constructed). However, I LOVE Derek in this fic. The plot is decent (again, a little forced) but Derek is fab.

I Wish I Could See You
Derek's in an indie band. I wish they'd film this fic and show it every Christmas. Easily my favorite rock star AU of all time.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:17 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lettered.livejournal.com
DUDE. I just finished Dating Backwards. I like porn star AUs, though. What's funny about you mentioning this one is that it was the most hardcore "if only you would just TALK to each other" plot that I have yet read in the fandom, and you say that's your main experience with this fic. But anyway, what I loved about that one was the top/bottom and/or dom/sub dynamics--Derek was really, really in love, and just wanted it, wanted it, wanted it. It makes so much more sense to me for him to be that way than Stiles, and usually in fic Stiles is the one who is all pining and desperately wanting to tap that.

I haven't read any of the others! I'm excited! Thank you!

Date: 2013-09-22 02:31 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
But see my problem with the "if you would just talk" plot is that it's often the ONLY plot. And there are so many scenes where one character more or less blurts out how they feel and the other character absolutely fails to understand English in a very strained and convoluted way. The porn star AU worked for exactly the reason you stated (the top/bottom and dom/sub dynamics) plus the fact that Stiles had werewolf issues and Derek had human issues and the fact that Stiles honestly thought Derek was just an inconsiderate, bad, bad model. Which I adored.

I loved Buffy or HP stories where the two main characters failed at communication because there was always a magical and/or monstery plot going on around them, often involving the ensemble cast. I've unfortunately read too many Sterek fics where the MOW plot was literally something like "Faeries! Stiles hates fucking faeries!" and Scott and Lydia are props or the entire werewolf contingent are a mindless group of puppy piling, scent marking mannequins who live to see Stiles and Derek bone.

Ooo...have you read the one where Stiles becomes friends with Lydia and Danny? It has some of the most realistic high school social structure I've ever seen. I'll have to find it.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:40 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lettered.livejournal.com
there was always a magical and/or monstery plot going on around them, often involving the ensemble cast.

Huh. This isn't really my experience with HP. Or BtVS. But I'm alright with plotless things that focus on the epic romance of two characters--as long as those characters are likeable and fleshed out and have real, comprehensible issues that make real, comprehensible tension.

Scott and Lydia are props or the entire werewolf contingent are a mindless group of puppy piling, scent marking mannequins who live to see Stiles and Derek bone.

I always cherish your ability to make me guffaw.

have you read the one where Stiles becomes friends with Lydia and Danny?

No! ...I have to confess right now that my favorite Sterek fic is that one where Derek has two kids and Stiles is a kindergarten teacher. It has nothing to do with TW. For me Sterek is the new J2 fic; there is no canon. THERE IS NO CANON.

Date: 2013-09-22 02:46 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com
I love DILF, too!! That was one of the first fics I read in this fandom.

Really on the non-plotty/ensembly fics with HP? The majority of Harry/Draco I read had the two of them trying to figure out how they felt about each other against the backdrop of Voldemort/Auror cases/Quidditch matches/curses/spells/Ron-Hermoine-Ginny-Pansy-everyone at Hogwarts-including probably Snape).

Here's the Sterek with Stiles's BFF-dom with Danny and Lydia:

Will To Follow Through

Date: 2013-09-22 03:08 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lettered.livejournal.com
Oh, DILF. I wasn't really interested in the show or the pairing; I just wanted Stiles Stiles Stiles and some fluff, and then DILF happened and ruined me forever.

The majority of Harry/Draco I read

You know what! There is a marked difference between H/D while the series was still coming out and the H/D now. Now it's all about how they have bakeries. When I first started in H/D it was a lot more about the war.

Thanks so much for the link! Awesomesauce.

AHAHAHAHA I READ THAT CURRY FIC. Oh man, I blinked for a good two minutes at my screen.

I get thrown out EVERY TIME. (On the flip side, I didn't like HP fics with obvious Americanisms, either.) WRITE IN THE SHOW'S VOICE, ffs.

I will never get over how much you and Holland Roden smirk just alike. Un. Canny.

The Americanisms with HP also made me jolt. And lately it's been anachronisms in historical fic (I just read a 1965 set fic where characters said, "It's like, you know..." No, it's not. We didn't use like and 'ya know' like that until the 80s. I am getting so old.
